Local man survives bear attack

FOSTER’S GLEN – Department of Fish and Wildlife officials have reported that Hank Daley of Foster’s Glen escaped with only minor injuries after falling into the hands of a black bear recently.

Daley, 19, was hiking alone in the Upper Basin forest range, near Mt. Makajah, and was on his way back to his truck near dusk when the bear sprang upon him.

“I had no warning,” said Daley. “I didn’t see anything or hear anything, and all of a sudden it just came out of the bushes nearby.”

DFW officials believe that the bear had a cub close by and attacked Daley out of a protective motherly instinct. They say that Daley was simply an unlucky bystander, in the wrong place at the wrong time. The good news, however, is that Daley is expected to make a full recovery in a few weeks’ time.

Black bear, which officials remind us are not maneaters, are quite prevalent in the area.
