Not Everyone Loving Linsanity

How’s the old saying go? You can’t please everyone all of the time? Well, count New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams among the “can’t please” crowd when it comes to New York Knicks phenom Jeremy Lin, who’s taken the NBA and, seemingly, the public by storm.

So what’s the deal, Deron? Can’t stand a feel-good story? Don’t like polite guys?

“It started on me,” Williams said. “It’s been stuck on my mind.”

Indeed, Linsanity began with the rising star’s performance against Williams—25 points (on 10-of-19 shooting), 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals—in a 99-92 Knicks win Feb. 4. And it’s stuck in Williams’ craw ever since.

Per Yahoo! Sports: “When somebody says they destroyed you, and you watch the tape and you don’t feel like you got destroyed, you circle those games,” Williams said. “I took offense.”

Williams got some revenge last night, torching Lin and the Knicks for 38 points, including eight 3-pointers, in a 100-92 Nets win.

Again per Yahoo! Sports: “For Williams, this was a terrific time to catch Lin. With the return of Carmelo Anthony, there was uncertainty with this Knicks offense, some tentativeness. Lin played a terrific game – 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds – but it was an important lesson for Lin: He’s a target now. Between then and now, Williams found his Twitter feed running relentless reminders of Lin obliterating him.

“‘Every three lines … “Jeremy Lin destroys Deron Williams,” ’ Williams said.”

Athletes are usually ultracompetitive, and being a (very) amateur athlete myself, I can see why Williams would be bothered by what transpired Feb. 4. Still, I find this funny.
