Anne Graham Lotz Votes ‘No’ for Atheist Candidates … and So Do I

Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham and herself an evangelist, said Sunday on Meet the Press that she wouldn’t vote for an atheist presidential candidate.

“I would not vote for a man who was an atheist, because I believe you need to have an acknowledgement or a reverence or a fear for almighty God. And I believe that’s where wisdom comes from,” she said, later adding, “The Bible says that the beginning of wisdom is fear of God, and I believe one of the greatest lacks in our nation is that genuine reverence for an almighty God.”

I’m sure this will ruffle a few feathers, but it shouldn’t—this nation and its people have a long, well-documented belief in and reliance on the Judeo-Christian God, and, as various news articles on this story note, 53% of Americans said in 2007 that they wouldn’t vote for an atheist—despite the fact that we now live in the most secular period of our nation’s history.

In case you’re wondering, the Bible verse she’s alluding to is Proverbs 9:10 (NIV):

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

And I agree with her 100%.

Shouldn’t ruffle any feathers, huh? Because people whose moral character has just been malined ought not to object, especially not when a reason can be produced for that which makes their actual thoughts, words, and actions completely irrelevant to the question of theiir character.
