Rock Band Pillar Takes a Break

This is the first post in a new category here on Jason Drexler Writes—Music—and it concerns my favorite band, Pillar.

This hard-rocking group of Jesus followers from Kansas via Oklahoma has been banging out hits for more than a decade now, but lately has experienced a lot of lineup turnover and a bit of road-trip burnout. Today I was (again) checking Pillar’s website to see if they might be working on a new album (their previous one, Confessions, was released in 2010), and found a link that took me to an entry on their Facebook page. In a February 23 post titled “State of the Union,” lead singer Rob Beckley acknowledges that there have been some questions lately concerning Pillar, and does a good job answering them.

Essentially, he says that Pillar hasn’t technically broken up, and that “we have all talked about doing another record and will let you know when that day comes.” I, for one, hope it comes soon, but I understand that being in a band requires a lot of time on the road, away from family, and that guys sometimes just get tired of industry politics and the same-old-same-old, so I wish all of them well, and that they get to spend a lot of time with their families and churches and get refreshed and just enjoy the new (temporary?) schedule.

In the meantime, Beckley is coming out with his first solo album, scheduled for a March 14 release on new label Idefi Music

. I heard that it sounds a lot like Pillar (even though he’s the only Pillar member involved), but maybe that’s just because Beckley is the voice of Pillar, so when you hear it you think “Pillar” (kind of like how I think “Creed” when I listen to Scott Stapp’s solo work). I’ll hopefully be getting that CD as soon as it comes out, and once I’ve given it sufficient spin time, I’ll let you all know what I think about it.
